The threat of climate change, mainly caused by the burning of fossil fuels, is the biggest challenge facing humanity. Tackling climate change must be at the heart of all policies - at the local, national and international levels. Cornwall needs to play its full part in this process. Electricity and gas have become increasingly expensive and prices will continue to rise. Given the importance of reducing carbon emissions small-scale renewable energy generation looks increasingly attractive. The other side of the energy coin is efficiency. Using less energy reduces the Council’s costs, our domestic fuel bills and carbon emissions. |
The energy sector has considerable potential for growth in Cornwall in both renewable production and efficiency, and can provide skilled employment as well as environmental gains. The Wave Hub is a welcome development and will herald increasing interest in power from the sea. Other clean sources of power, including wind, solar and geothermal, can also be harnessed in Cornwall to meet our future energy needs. The Council should plan to make Cornwall completely self-sufficient in energy, including energy used for transport, by 2025. |
Our Vision for Energy
Cornwall as a powerhouse for renewable energy generation, tapping into our abundant natural resources and building a strong local manufacturing industry in clean energy. A deep green makeover for Council buildings, using state-of-the-art energy-saving techniques, efficient heating and lighting, passive solar heating, natural ventilation and renewable energy technology. Extending large-scale renewables to schools, leisure facilities and other public buildings.
A Forest for Cornwall – one or more large new areas of woodland that will provide a carbon sink and a long-term source of natural materials for construction, furniture and fuel. |
