A Fresh Start for Cornwall

Cornwall needs change. The recent decision to scrap district councils has taken power further away from local communities and centralised it into a single council for the whole of Cornwall. The County Council has lost its excellent rating from the Audit Commission. None of its services are now in the top-performing category. Millions of pounds of economic development money have been spent in Cornwall, often on schemes catering for the high-consumption lifestyles of the wealthy, rather than the local needs of deprived communities. |
Cornwall’s failed waste policy has been based on a massive new incinerator, rather than ambitious targets for waste reduction and recycling. Cornwall’s environmental record on encouraging renewable energy and conservation is being cancelled out by the millions spent on airport development and road improvements. Climate change is the major challenge that will face us in the life of the new council and work must begin immediately on building resilience into our communities. The elections to the new Cornwall Council on 4th June provide a real chance to face up to these big issues and bring new ideas and policies to help shape Cornwall’s future. |
