Newquay Airport Response

Bagas Gwer Kernewek has submitted a response to the Newquay Airport Draft Masterplan Consultation.

You can download a copy of our response here :  icon Newquay Airport Masterplan Response (219.33 kB)

Key points:

  • Technically flawed (mistakes in calculation) technical annexes used
  • Irrelevant biased information included in technical analysis
  • Failure to consider alternative options apart from a worst case scenario
  • Use of discredited predict'n'provide projections of future passenger numbers based on very questionable assumptions
  • Failure to acknowledge current scientific understanding of CO2 emissions and impacts of radiative forcing.
  • Failure to acknowledge political context and actions needed arising from Climate Change Act 2008
  • Failure to acknowledge current economic context, and failure to demonstrate ability of airport to act as 'engine' for any more economic activity than other uses
  • Attempt to conceal impact of quadrupling of number of cars on roads to airport and wider surface access issues
  • Use of wildly optimistic assumptions about future improvements in aircraft performance and wildly pessimistic assumptions about future improvements in efficiency of other modes of transport
  • Absolute failure to demonstrate any value for money from spending Cornish residents local tax

The Cornish Party calls for the withdrawl of the Airport Masterplan and preparation of a new version providing a valid basis for impartial assessment. In particular we would like to see an evaluation of the use of the site as a centre for production, development and training in renewable energy technologies which could act as an incubator for new business opportunities and also bring significant benefits to the local community.

The Cornish Green Party also calls for an investigation into the apparent deriliction of duty by the Scrutiny Committee of Cornwall County Council who have allowed continued public money to be poured into the airport without any minuted questioning of the basis or business case for spending on this scale.
